Εκατό περίπου χρόνια μετά την δημιουργία της σύγχρονης Μέσης Ανατολής οι ενδείξεις για το μέλλον αυτής της γειτονικής μας περιοχής είναι μάλλον αποθαρρυντικές: πρωτοφανείς εμφύλιες συγκρούσεις, αποσαρθρωμένα κράτη, ακραίες ομάδες που υμνούν το μίσος και τη βία, εκατομμύρια εκτοπισμένοι. Ακόμη χειρότερα, στην προσπάθειά μας να εξηγήσουμε τι συμβαίνει συχνά τελούμε υπό την ομηρία στερεοτυπικών αφηγήσεων για τους Άραβες και το Ισλάμ, οι οποίες μάλλον συγχέουν παρά διαφωτίζουν. Έχοντας ως αφετηρία την προσωπική βιωματική εμπειρία και την ιστορική ανάγνωση, θα επιχειρηθεί μια επαναπροσέγγιση των αφηγήσεων αυτών, σε συνάρτηση με μία ερμηνεία των παραμέτρων των κρίσεων και των δεδομένων τους.

Approximately hundred years after the creation of the modern Middle East, the signs for the future of this neighbouring region seem to be discouraging: unprecedented civil conflicts, disintegrated countries, extremist groups that praise hatred and violence, millions of displaced people. In our attempt to explain what is going on, we often trap ourselves in stereotypical narrations about the Arabs and Islam, which actually confuse rather than clarify the issue. Having as a point of departure the personal lived experience as well as the historical outlook, the presentation will seek to redefine these narratives in conjunction with an interpretation of the parameters defining these crises and their facts.

Μικρή Βιογραφία / Short Biography:

Ο Πάνος Κουργιώτης σπούδασε διεθνείς σχέσεις, ιστορία της Μέσης Ανατολής και αραβική γλώσσα στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγάιου. Μεταξύ 2005 – 2007 έζησε στην Δαμασκό, όπου συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στην αραβική γλώσσα. Από το 2007 ξεκίνησε τις μεταπτυχιακές του σπουδές στο τμήμα Πολιτικών Επιστημών του ΑΠΘ και το 2013 αναγορεύτηκε διδάκτορας του ίδιου τμήματος. Θέμα της διατριβής του υπήρξαν τα σύγχρονα ιδεολογικά ρεύματα του Ισλάμ. Εργάζεται ως καθηγητής αραβικής γλώσσας σε δημόσιους και ιδιωτικούς φορείς κι έχει έχει γράψει μελέτες για την ιστορία των Αράβων και το Ισλάμ.

Panos Kourgiotis studied international relations, history of the Middle East and Arabic at the University of the Aegean. Between 2005 and 2007 he lived in Damascus, where he continued his study of the Arabic language. In 2007 he started his postgraduate education in the School of political science at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 2013 he obtained a PhD from the same department. His doctoral thesis dealt with the modern ideological trends of Islam. He currently works as an Arabic teacher in state and private sectors and has authored several papers on the history of Arabs and Islam.
