“Socially Engaged? Better, Socially Married!”, Performative Lecture, 2014 – now

Περίληψη / Summary:

Η performance-ομιλία της Georgia Kotretsos ανακοινώνει ένα τολμηρό εγχείρημα από έναν ανώνυμο συνάδελφό της με τον τίτλο “Socially Engaged? Better, Socially Married!”. Προτείνοντας γάμο σε έξυπνα και δημιουργικά άτομα, τα οποία επιθυμούν να ζήσουν, να εργαστούν και να κάνουν έρευνα στην Ελλάδα για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα, η Kotretsos παραθέτει εκ νέου με πνευματώδη τρόπο μια ανοιχτή πρόσκληση για αιτήσεις με σκοπό την έκδοση άδειας παραμονής. Πρόκειται για μια πρόταση σε πολίτες της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης: ο γάμος θα πρέπει να είναι πέραν μίας συναλλαγής ελεύθερης βούλησης πραγματιστικού χαρακτήρα, θα πρέπει αντιθέτως να συμπεριλαμβάνει τις πολιτικές και πνευματικές ιδιότητες του εαυτού μας. Το project χρησιμοποιεί την ταυτότητα ως μέσο και τα δικαιώματα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης ως κεφάλαιο.

Το “Socially Engaged? Better, Socially Married!” παρουσιάστηκε στο πλαίσιο του FIELD MEETING, Asia Contemporary Art Week, Asian Society, το οποίο επιμελήθηκαν οι Leeza Ahmady και Xin Wang, Νέα Υόρκη, ΗΠΑ και στο FIELD MEETING Take 2: An Afterthought, 56th Μπιενάλε της Βενετίας, επιμέλεια της Leeza Ahmady, Navy’s Officer’s Club Arsenale, Βενετία, Ιταλία. Η Τρίτη παρουσίαση του project γίνεται στις Διασπορές, 50^ο Φεστιβάλ Δημητρίων, Θεσσαλονίκη.

Georgia Kotretsos’s performance-talk announced a daring project by an anonymous colleague entitled Socially Engaged? Better, Socially Married! Offering to marry intelligent, creative individuals who wish to live, work and do research in Greece for a long period of time, Kotretsos playfully recited an open call for applications; for visa purposes. This is a proposal to EU citizens as an editorial gesture: marriage should be more than a freely undertaken transaction, or simply grounded in the physical; it should encompass the civil and the intellectual attributes of ourselves. The project uses identity as a medium and EU rights as capital.

“Socially Engaged? Better, Socially Married!” has been performed at the FIELD MEETING, Asia Contemporary Art Week, Asian Society curated by Leeza Ahmady and Xin Wang, New York, USA and at FIELD MEETING Take 2: An Afterthought, 56th Venice Biennale, curated by Leeza Ahmady, Navy’s Officer’s Club Arsenale, Venice, Italy. The third presentation of the project is taking place at Diasporas, 50. Dimitria Festival, Thessaloniki.

Η Georgia Kotretsos (γεννημένη στη Θεσσαλονίκη), είναι εικαστικός που μένει στην Αθήνα, Ελλάδα. Έχει στο ενεργητικό της 7 ατομικές εκθέσεις και η δουλεία της έχει συμπεριληφθεί σε περισσότερες από 100 ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα, τις Η.Π.Α, την Ν. Αφρική κ.α. Έχει δείξει την δουλεία της στην 56^η Biennale της Βενετίας με την ACAW στα πλαίσια του Field Meeting – Βενετία, the Asian Society – N.Y, 4^th Μπιενάλε Θεσσαλονίκης Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, the Tinguely Museum – Μπάζελ, La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης – Θεσσαλονίκη, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis – MO και σε άλλα μέρη στη Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Το 2015 η Kotretsos κέρδισε το βραβείο NEON για την ατομική της έκθεση OPEN ARTISTS STUDIO FOUNDATION στο MaximiliansForum στο Μόναχο χορηγούμενη από το Department of Arts & CuIture του Μονάχου. Το 2014 η Kotretsos ανακυρήχθηκε υποψήφια για το βραβείο Future Generation Art Prize, The Victor Pinchuk Foundation, the Follow Fluxus 2014 Residency and Grant και το 2010 κέρδισε μεταξύ άλλων: την υποτροφία SUMMER STUDIO PROGRAM, SAIC, STEP Beyond Travel Grant – European Cultural Foundation 2007, το βραβείο The City Arts Grants of Chicago-The Illinois Arts Council 2005 και την υποτροφία Anna Louise Raymond Alumni Fellowship 2004.

Georgia Kotretsos (born in Thessaoliniki, Greece) is a visual artist based in Athens, Greece. She has had 7 solo exhibitions and her work has been included in more that 100 group shows, in Greece, the US, South Africa and elsewhere. Her works have been shown at: the 56th Venice Art Biennale with the ACAW for the collateral Field Meeting, Venice; the Asian Society, NY; 4thThessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art; the Tinguely Museum, Basel; La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, Mulhouse; Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, MO and elsewhere in Greece and abroad. In 2015 Kotretsos was a NEON grant recipient for her solo exhibition OPEN ARTISTS STUDIO FOUNDATION at MaximiliansForum in Munich supported by the Department of Arts & CuIture, City of Munich.
