THE ISLAND – RESIGNIFIED

Το “The island – resignified” ή “Το νησί επανανοηματοδοτούμενο” είναι ένα residential project που πραγματοποιήθηκε για πρώτη χρονιά στο τουριστικό κατάλυμα neion στη Λευκάδα. Η μορφή (πρόγραμμα φιλοξενίας καλλιτεχνών) και ο τίτλος του φανερώνει πιθανά τις έννοιες βάσει των οποίων αναπτύχθηκε το project, κάποιες από τις οποίες είναι η μετακίνηση ως εικαστική πρακτική, ο νομαδισμός ως τρόπος ζωής και πολιτική στάση, οι μεταβλητές ταυτότητες των υποκειμένων, οι χαρτογραφήσεις και η σχεσιακότητα. Κατά την παραγωγή των επιμέρους projects, οι συμμετέχοντες ασχολήθηκαν με κάποιες από αυτές τις προβληματικές, επικεντρώνοντας το ενδιαφέρον τους σε τοπικά θέματα και ιδιαίτερα στοιχεία ή αναδεικνύοντας σημαντικά σύγχρονα ζητήματα, όπως ο ρόλος του διαδικτύου στην καθημερινότητα. Το εγχείρημα καθεαυτό σχεδιάστηκε με στόχο να θέσει σε κίνηση πράγματα πολύ σταθερά, όπως το ίδιο το νησί της Λευκάδας και τον παγιωμένο-κοινό τρόπο που είναι αντιληπτό ιδίως κατά τη διάρκεια της τουριστικής σεζόν, τη λειτουργία του ξενώνα neion και του δικού μου ρόλου σε αυτόν, το ενδιαφέρον και την ευαισθητοποίηση της τοπικής κοινότητας και κατ’ επέκταση του ελληνικού πληθυσμού για σύγχρονα θέματα πολιτισμού και κουλτούρας.

“The island – resignified” is a residential project realised for the first time this summer in the guesthouse ‘neion’ in the island of Lefkada. The notions that led to the development of this project can be conceived through its form and title. Mobility as an artistic practice, nomadism as way of life and political attitude, the diversity of the subjects’ identities, new cartographies and relational aesthetics are only some of the concepts that were considered and discussed during the residency and the workshops held at neion. The participants focused their research on local particularities or contributed with important contemporary discourses, such as the role of the internet in the everyday life. Stable situations, the island of Lefkada and the way it is perceived, especially during the touristic season, the function of ‘neion’ as guesthouse and my role in it were shaken and doubted by this project, as one of its aims amongst others is to stimulate the local community and the greek population with matters of contemporary culture and civilisation.

Δήμητρα Κονδυλάτου / Dimitra Kondylatou

*1987, Αθήνα, ζεί και εργάζεται μεταξύ Αθήνας και Λευκάδας.

Είναι απόφοιτος της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας (ΑΣΚΤ) και μεταπτυχιακή φοιτήτρια του Dutch Art Institute (DAI). Ενδιαφέρεται για τη σχέση και τα όρια της τέχνης με άλλα πεδία, όπως οι κοινωνικές επιστήμες και η καθημερινή ζωή. H δουλειά της περιλαμβάνει αφηγηματικές βιντεο – εγκαταστάσεις και συμμετοχικά – residential projects με κεντρικά θέματα τη σχέση του πολιτισμού με τα ένστικτα, τη μνήμη και την εξουσία, την έννοια της φιλοξενίας, τον τουρισμό και τη σημασία της κουλτούρας στην καθημερινότητα. Από το 2008 και έπειτα έχει συμμετάσχει σε διάφορες ομαδικές εκθέσεις, workshops και συνέδρια στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, όπως οι Διάλογοι #9 (2015); Φωνές (2014); Dialoghi di video – arte tra memoria e archivi in Opificio Telecom Italia – Spaceo Contemporaneo (2013); Rooms 2013 in St George Lycabettus hotel & Kappatos gallery, Athens (2013); What we want, 12th Exhibition of Contemporary Art, Action Field Kodra, Thessaloniki (2012).

*1987, Athens, lives and works between Athens and Lefkada.

Graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) and post-graduate student in the Master course of the Dutch Art Institute (DAI). She is interested in the relationship and the limits of art with other fields, such as social sciences and the everyday. Her work includes narrative video – installations and participatory residential projects that evolve around culture, instincts, memory and power relations, the notions of hospitality and tourism. Since 2008 she has participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
